Our names are David and Terri Wegener and we are missionaries serving in Zambia with Mission to the World, the mission-sending agency of the Presbyterian Church in America. We'd like to introduce our family and our work to you.
We've been married for 23 years and have four children: Elizabeth (16), Mary (14), John (12) and Sarah (10). In her spare time, Lizzie likes to read mysteries, do scrapbooks and be with her friends. Mary enjoys working with children, running track and playing with her younger sister. John enjoys most sports but especially the ones we play in
Zambia: soccer, cricket and rugby. His favorite soccer team is Liverpool in the English Premier league and he'll be glad to tell you all about them. Sarah would love to be a nurse or a gymnast and she shows a ready compassion for others who are hurting. Terri enjoys cooking and teaching the Bible to and mentoring younger women in the church. David is an ex-jock, who likes to read books and follows Track and Field. In Africa, he plays squash, runs and hopes to play rugby.
For the last four years, we have worked in the north-central part of Zambia. David's primary task is training pastors and Christian leaders at the Theological College of Central Africa (TCCA, pronounced tea-ka). This school has been in existence for over four decades and is one of the finest institutions of its kind on the continent. He teaches courses in theology, New Testament and church history and mentors some of the students in his classes. Last year he began teaching part-time in the Preacher's College of the Reformed Baptists in Zambia's capital city of Lusaka, about four hours south of our home in Ndola. He holds the chair of Historical Theology at this school and believes it is a rare privilege to help in the training of these men for ministry in the church. His background of pastoral work in Indiana and Wisconsin, along with three master's degrees (from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and the University of Wisconsin), has given him a good foundation to do the ministry to which God has called him. More recently he has begun to plant a church in the ex-patriot community in Ndola. Terri, in addition to managing our home and the schedules of our children, teaches in and helps to coordinate the program for the wives of TCCA's (mostly male) students. She also leads a Bible study for ex-patriot women in our city.
When we think of Africa, we might picture wildebeests galloping across the savannah, babies with distended stomachs or reports about the AIDS pandemic. It seems the continent goes from one crisis to another. Bono tells us the answer is debt forgiveness. Politicians proclaim the necessity of anti-corruption campaigns. Business leaders tout the value of western investment. We believe these proposed solutions don't go to the heart of the matter. The problems we see are the result of sin, personal and corporate, and can only be addressed by the Biblical gospel of a sovereign God and a crucified Lord, applied by the Holy Spirit in His work of convicting of sin, regenerating, sealing and sanctifying.
We are committed to Africa for the long haul. By God's grace, we will continue to help young Christians to live holy lives and to know, love and proclaim the gospel. Thanks for partnering with us in this work. It could not be done without you.
